New Delhi to Jaipur
Hi everyone!
Well we have now moved over to Rambagh Palace, Jaipur which i have been told is called the 'Pink City'. This actually is obvious to anyone because the walls surrounding the city are painted pink. My trusty guidebook tells me that the pink color was used at the time of building to create an impression of red sandstone, to mimic buildings of Mughal cities - it was repainted in 1976, during the visit of the Prince of Wales but it has a more disturbing purpose which is apparently to hide from visitors the extreme poverty that seems to be a recurring theme in India. It seems to be worse here than in Delhi or maybe i am just beginning to open my eyes. Wow! we take things for granted...
To say the hotel is amazing is an understatement i felt a little guilty having come through such obvious poverty. The first thing we did was to take a car to the old city (pink city) today so that we could all take an elephant ride. Not great for the Elephants because they are captive but it was amazing and the Kids loved it! I don't want to think about the deeper issues because i think that as long as i acknowledge that all is not as it may seem on the pretty outside and make my children understand this, then we can have a rounded experience without becoming emotionally involved.
En route, the normal amount of street kids clawed at the car, dirty and looking so under nourished in comparison. So so upsetting. Like i said we take so much for granted. I gave them all the food I had in our bag and the desperate snatching was snake like! Like animals in the zoo, so sad it made me want to cry.
I Was hoping to leave india tomorrow but Singapore airlines didnt hold our tickets long enough for some friends to decide if they were coming over to meet us in Goa. Looks like we're gonna be here another week now, not sure which part as we will need to move hotels.
