Beijing 2

You wouldn't believe how cheap massages are here! I have had lots of them and can honestly say, these have been the best by far! Cross between getting beaten to a pulp and having someone put friction burns on your back! Amazing!

I had "cupping" too a few times, it allegedly separates the deeper muscle tissue and is good for circulation, bad thing is that you end up with lots of round bruises on your back like some Alien life form. The massages were about £6 and the cupping £3.50! Compared to about £40 in the UK.

Struggling to feed kids here, everything is stodge in the shops, either sweets or really fatty foods. Pointless going out for dinner as kids wont eat anything so having to go to Mcdonalds and KFC a lot which I hate doing, the kids are so hyper on junk food. Cant even find any basics like ham or cheese they like, nightmare!

China

Arrived Beijing China 11th April, very very tired! Flight out of Singapore wasn't until 1am. All the babies needed their mama at same time on way so was fairly tough, had to strap Tippe to my front, carry Malieka and push Chaska in the pushchair as all couldn't stay awake to walk on plane. The joys of being a single parent eh? Ha! You can imagine we had some strange looks. Arrived about 7am wearing shorts and t shirts...bad move, it was flippin freezing!

Remind me not to try saving money on hotels, the one we had was a throw back from the 60's and our room had only enough space for our two jammed together single beds and a torture chamber looking contraption they passed for a cot. Sleep time was very stressful as it was so low, Tippe just got up and out when she was bored..not good.

The biggest hurdle was the language barrier, no matter how loud I shouted things over and over, they didn't understand? Ha! Seriously though, nobody spoke English in our hotel, not even the receptionists.

Beijing is a beautiful city, so much to see and experience, so much history there too. Some funny sights such as badly spelled signs in shops and menu's, where they have converted a sentence literally but it doesn't read correctly....says the worst speller in the world.

Tea is the drink of choice in Beijing and it needs to be drunk as often as possible, no matter where you are or what you might be doing. You see most people carrying a fairly ugly looking cross between a mug, a thermos flask, and an empty instant coffee jar. It has to be transparent glass or plastic so you can show off exactly what kind of wicked tea you're brewing. Here's a tip for those who want to try... Chinese tea can be made from almost anything, at the moment I am drinking one made from tiny rose buds. Think I will be green and jasmine tea'd out by the time I leave.

One of the more amusing things to be seen in Beijing, at least for most western visitors, is to see Beijing residents happily sleeping whenever they get a chance. One of the more popular places if there is no bed available is at the lunch / dinner table / work desk! This habit is formed and encouraged in early school years where pupils are told to rest for an hour or so in their lunch break. However, Beijing residents as they got older seemed reluctant to let this habit go! As a result its now perfectly socially acceptable to sleep wherever you want! Got some great pics!

Another odd sight, if you're lucky, or unlucky, depending on how you look at it, you will notice some children wandering the streets of Beijing with a slit in the back of their trousers. These trousers with the built-in slit can be bought new from normal clothes shops. The reason is the age-old custom/practice of being able to stop at will and take a bathroom break, this practice is still going on but as the city is getting more modern the government is apparently asking the public to be ever more polite and civilized using advertising campaigns. Because nappys are easier to find now the practice of letting your child "go" wherever he/she wants is becoming frowned upon by a lot of Beijing, I experienced a boy squatting in the middle of a shopping mall!

Bought some lovely art there, a huge oil painting of a Tibetian little girl, so beautiful. Shame I have to lug it around for the rest of the trip though.

Made sure we did the sights, we visited the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the fabulous Summer Palace, the children were amazing climbing the great wall, it was so steep in parts you would be climbing the steps on all fours. You can imagine having a 2+ stone baby on your hip would make it a tad harder too, phew! I was getting patted on the back and people were clapping when I got to the look out point, so funny. Kids loved it surprisingly and didn't moan once!

The tough part for the children is that wherever we went we became the point of attraction, not only for our coloring but for the fact there were 3 children, in Beijing they are only allowed to have one child! Apparently if you live out in the country there is a chance you could have 2. People were amazed, they would count out the children and point to my tummy, when I nodded they would all cheer and tell each other, pat me and congratulate me. Actually everywhere we have been people have been so pleased to see 3 children, it's refreshing for me to have positive comments about it, they really rejoice in it.

The children had full days too at the amusement park and zoo, was strange though as the fair seemed closed, nobody waiting for rides and no real atmosphere, probably down to the fact that nobody has children here!

Ciao for now

Birthday weekend

Nightmare! Somehow all the blog of the birthday weekend has been wiped off! Well...it stated with a panic situation in Singapore when Chaska asked how many presents etc did I think would find him abroad..yikes! How can a one in a million lifetime trip come anywhere near to some spiderman pants and starwars figures etc? So thinking as they had such an amazing day at Sentosa http://www.sentosa.com.sg/ I would arrange for him to have it there. We had 2 nights there, I told him in the taxi en route, he was absolutely thrilled! I managed to get a cake made for him and smuggle it in to dinner as a surprise and the resident band sang happy birthday...chinese style! He was a tad embarrassed. Birthday morning he had some bits and bobs, mostly things he needed for the pool etc. Thank heavens, what I dreaded would be an awful and boring day for him turned out to be his best one yet..so he says.

On the day we were leaving our hotel, I was packing the cases and opened the patio doors to get some non nappy infested air through the room, thinking as we were on the 10th floor security wouldn't be an issue, however...I didn't account for monkeys! I turned around to find a huge wild baboon sat perched on my chair!! I shooed him away but he wasn't keen to budge, needless to say the doors remained shut and we enjoyed the lovely air con instead.

Sentosa Island, Singapore

Happy Easter all!

Woke this morning to find Malieka and I absolutely covered in chocolate! So funny! She had woken at silly o'clock to check if the Easter bunny had been, and to her delight he had! Unfortunately the bunnies in hot countries only leave a few small ones as they melt too quickly in their paws, so in her half awake/still asleep mode brought them into my bed to show me and probably hide under the covers from her brother. Needless to say, there were no intact eggs left this morning and a very cheesed off brother! Went over to the mainland this morning to go to church, was a huge congregation, in St Andrews Cathedral, I really enjoyed the service but was very different to what the children are used to, was very traditional so children were very restless unfortunately. The gifts of freshly baked muffins on way out softened the blow for them anyway!

Zoo last week was great, kids loved it! Chaska's tooth was playing up again so was uncomfortable for him though. Tried booking in with dentist but all closed as public holiday, nightmare! It'll have to be China now unfortunately. Went to the night Safari also that day which was amazing, getting so close to all the wild animals, lions n tigers n bears..oh my! Tippe enjoyed it to, she "woof woofed" and roared all day bless her.

On our last night we took a walk to Clarkes Quay where there is lots of shops and places to eat, very touristy but great hussle n bussle.

The pics of kids with dolphins etc were from a day trip over to Sentosa island, it was formerly a fishing village but now has wonderful beaches, cable car rides, luge, huge statue of MERLION, a symbol of Singapore, half fish and half lion. Also has a butterfly park, underwater world and much more. Obviously the children thought it was amazing and even after staying there until 2000hr, didn't want to go. This gave me the idea for his birthday, we came for two nights to mark his birthday, was so worried it wouldn't feel like his big day as we are away but here, there are so many children their ages its been great! I had a cake made and smuggled into dinner tonight for him, he went rather shy when the resident band came over to sing happy birthday!! Thought it best we did it tonight as even though it's tomorrow, we will be on our way to the aiport at dinner time. We are booked into the Wangfujing Da Wan Hotel Beijing. NO.A2 Ganyu Bystreet Dongdan North St. Dong Cheng District. Beijing, China from 10th Apr - 17th Apr so far but will play it by ear. It's in the city center, close to the Wangfujing Commercial Area, some of the tourist sites are also nearby, such as the Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Beihai Park etc. Really looking forward to China.

Off to sleep now as i'm sure Chaska will be up early as a lark! Love to you all and God bless xxx

Singapore

Not much done today. A bit of a lazy one. We walked around chinatown and tehe local markets then back to the hotel for a swim. Xantippe is up up and away now, she's walking really well! We have extended our time here too as wanted a day to chill before getting all the sights done.

Bought kids three outfits, belt and badge for £10! Bargain eh! Kids also had new nintendo games today for being so good this last few days. Going to have a nightmare trying to secretly buy presents for Chaska's birthday! Lets hope they turn their back long enough for me to scoop him some surprises! Off to zoo and night safari tomorrow so should be fun for them.

The 3 kids played so well together we decided to extend our stay, whatsmore, we have planned to get the kids together when we are staying in Brisbane with my brother Dave, really looking forward to it!

Booked into the Furama hotel in chinatown, Singapore tonight. Lovely hotel and lots to see! Off to the zoo tomorrow so all exited! Tippe was so ill for 4 days! She is finally on the mend but Malieka has the bug now! Nightmare!!

Back to Delhi!

Moved back to Delhi today as we seemed to get everything we wanted to do done in Jaipur. The children loved riding the elephant who Malieka kindly named "crusty" because his skin was hard and, well, CRUSTY! The poverty was even worse than Delhi and i was told that the Government actually paints the walls of the "Pink City" and maintains the frontages of the buildings where they think tourists may go to cause an illusion. I saw behind those walls and it is absolute hell. Kids lying in their own feaces, starving, desperate people, so unfair and apparently so deserted by their own. This is all part of why we took this trip though. So safe and cosseted in our comfortable lives and yet out there in the big wide world is a melting pot of incredible beauty and incredible misery which we all needed to experience. We struggled to even get basic supplies in Jaipur. Personal hygiene, baby food or just healthy food that the kids would eat were a problem. Thankfully Xantippe has adjusted well to goats milk! Bless her!

Not much for children to do in Jaipur. I managed to find an outside 'eatery' on last night with a sort of mini travelling fair...well, it had a bouncy castle, climbing thing and electric mini cars for them to ride in. The Kids enjoyed it though and the locals all adored Tippe (the Diva)...for a change!

We splashed out one night and had dinner in the Palace gardens. What amazing food. Fresh, succulent king prawns cooked in spices, mmmm! The children, by turning on the ultra-cute thing that only children do, managed to get them to cook plain chicken 'n' fries. Thank goodness as they wouldn't have liked the spices and i would have had 3 'Wafer Thin Mints' to deal with! There was live music and dancers too and dare i say it was also nice to see other British faces for the first time in Rajhistan.

After our lovely last evening of colorful dance we made the 5 hour car journey back to Delhi. The kids were amazing again. I have now got the military precision timing off to a fine art and this journey was timed so that they would all sleep for big chunk of the journey. It's strange you know but all of the cars over here seem to have the same wiring fault! With their horns. They all seem to be constantly sounding and there is no way that you would bother having a new car out here, they drive into anything! Finally we got to our destination and booked into The Metropolitan Hotel, New Delhi yesterday.

Going to get our old taxi guy, a gent that took us everywhere during our first stay in Delhi, to take us to the zoo tomorrow, that should be an experience!? Not sure i'm going to like it but... The kids started their schooling today, science and maths, they were actually asking to start it!

We have a good routine so far, we have kept to Tippe's 2 naps in the day, the second one we all tend to take together.....aghhh, tough life eh?

The poverty has really got to me here and we have decided to try and do the little that we can to help a few. Yesterday we took some more things to the homeless, a young mum on the streets with 3 little babies. I was so shocked. We took my coat I brought with us for her as they are freezing at night, some more childrens clothes, toiletries, food and water. Took her powdered milk and baby granuals. I have never received such gratitude, her face was a picture. I felt so humbled by it all. A word to the wise. If you want to stay inside your bubble of green grass and sunshine then don't visit India where reality will hit you like a wet sock right in the face. If you want to climb out of your bubble and experience life then India is a fabulous place to visit.

We are going to Singapore soon so will post out the hotel address for anyone wanting to send Chaska's birthday card there. He's checking his hotmail account daily hoping to get some mail so any little hello's will be really welcomed!!??Bless!

Love to you all n God bless

New Delhi to Jaipur

Hi everyone!

Well we have now moved over to Rambagh Palace, Jaipur which i have been told is called the 'Pink City'. This actually is obvious to anyone because the walls surrounding the city are painted pink. My trusty guidebook tells me that
the pink color was used at the time of building to create an impression of red sandstone, to mimic buildings of Mughal cities - it was repainted in 1976, during the visit of the Prince of Wales but it has a more disturbing purpose which is apparently to hide from visitors the extreme poverty that seems to be a recurring theme in India. It seems to be worse here than in Delhi or maybe i am just beginning to open my eyes. Wow! we take things for granted...

To say the hotel is amazing is an understatement i felt a little guilty having come through such obvious poverty. The first thing we did was to take a car to the old city (pink city) today so that we could all take an elephant ride. Not great for the Elephants because they are captive but it was amazing and the Kids loved it! I don't want to think about the deeper issues because i think that as long as i acknowledge that all is not as it may seem on the pretty outside and make my children understand this, then we can have a rounded experience without becoming emotionally involved.

En route, the normal amount of street kids clawed at the car, dirty and looking so under nourished in comparison. So so upsetting. Like i said we take so much for granted. I gave them all the food I had in our bag and the desperate snatching was snake like! Like animals in the zoo, so sad it made me want to cry.

I Was hoping to leave india tomorrow but Singapore airlines didnt hold our tickets long enough for some friends to decide if they were coming over to meet us in Goa. Looks like we're gonna be here another week now, not sure which part as we will need to move hotels.

I'll keep you posted! xxx

Ok so you know we said that we were going to follow Elizabeth around the world on her very Ooo! travels with her 3 beautiful children, well here is the first installment. Enjoy...

"After a very tearful goodbye with Craig (the on/off boyfriend) at the airport i boarded our plane with my 3 beautiful children Chaska, Malika & Xantippe to start our once in a lifetime journey around the world. I had mixed emotions, a little scared of our unknown future from here on and a little worry about whether the children would be alright. You know the usual thing when you take your kids abroad with illness, home sickness, whether someone would try to steal them!
As we settled down on the flight though it became clear that this was the right thing to do. There i was with the most precious and unconditional things in my life sat right next to me. My children...my babies. Thankfully, Tippe fell into a blissful sleep soon after getting on the plane. Seeing that for the long first leg of our adventure we were travelling Cattle Class it was a godsend. Being only 1 years old she was tired from just the excitement of the airport! Oh to be a child again. As i gazed at her I wondered to myself. Would she remember any parts of our trip? The places, the smells, sights or people or would they be distant memory. Like 'de ja vue' moments that we all get later in her life. My attention drifted to the other two, Maleika 5 and Chaska (my 'little man') 6. They were tired and excited, although i'm not sure at that age that they could quite comprehend the enormity of this trip and how privileged we all were to have this amazing opportunity. Maleika, bless her thought that we were already in India because of the number of Asian people on board, as we sat on the tarmac at Heathrow. I had to explain that many people on the plane were from India and were probably going home to visit their families. Bless! One thing i knew though was that we would have a ball, as a family. This would make our already unbreakable bond even stronger and experience some of the most incredible places on earth as a family. I couldn't wish to be anywhere else."

"...after what seemed like an eternity, with Tippe on my lap for 7 hours and thus most of the feeling having drained from my lower body, we arrived in our first destination. New Delhi. The children bless them had slept for most of the way and were still groggy when we arrived. It was 1025 am and it was hot on the tarmac. As we emerged from the plane and i gathered children and belongings together we somehow managed to stay together and make our way into arrivals, leaving the last essence of the United Kingdom on board the British Airways Jumbo. The heat was intense like that of a sauna bath, the noise was unbelievable! A cacophany of engines, voices shouting, doors slamming mixed into what made up an entire Urban Orchestra. None of the voices were familiar and the language, of course, was unintelligible. For a moment i faltered and felt excited, overwhelmed... It was so far removed from the equivalent British atmosphere i was enraptured. Then i felt the little hands in mine, my children for whom this welcome must have been even more overwhelming and unfamiliar. I remembered that we were being collected from the airport by 'limousine'. I know this may sound extravagant but it is quite normal. They don't recommend that westerners, particularly women and children, wander alone around the city and thus the Limousine practice is 'everyday'.

Our stop was the Grand Intercontinental in New Delhi where we would be staying for our first few nights. A beautiful hotel which, being a lover of FABULOUS hotels, was great for me but boring for the babies. They can't do much with palm trees and ornamental animals! It did give us a chance though to have a look around the city. Any excuse to get out of the hotel. We were fortunate, i think, to meet a Chinese lady who was quite taken with us all and our quest. She had her driver take us where we wanted to go during our stay and so we were able to explore the city a little and visit an amazing 'Government Market' which was full of the most beautiful traditional clothes i have ever seen. I resisted though because we were on a budget but i did buy the children their very own outfits. We managed all of this without getting mugged or kidnapped by the Chinese lady who it would appear was gracious because she could be, nothing more. For that i am eternally grateful because it made the first days of our adventure as exciting as i hope the rest will be.

Thursday we are going on a tour to one of the great wonders of the world. The beautiful Thaj Mahal. The journey is nearly 4hrs each way but to miss it would be scandalous as this is exactly the reason we are doing this.

Well I had better get prepared for these snoring children to wake up, we have definately been on go slow since we landed!

Take care all and God bless,
Love the Corrigans

Phileas Fogg!

Ok a short one from me today but something i just had to write down. My best friend Elizabeth is a beautiful person both spiritually and physically. She has 3 adorable and equally beautiful children who i adore and one of whom i am very proud to say is my GodSon.

She is very content with who she is but one thing she has never been able to do is find a partner in life who will love her for who she is. They want to possess her and over time, change her despite the fact that they were attracted to her personality and that was the thing that they loved in the beginning. Her ex husband has also made her life very difficult over the last few years sometimes driving her to depths of sadness that nobody should ever experience.

Never being one to do things by halves she has taken the bull truly by the horns this time as an opportunity to step through a sliding door and go in search of a brighter life has presented iteself. She could have played it safe and just plodded on but then that just wouldn't be Elizabeth. Here is what she is doing and we are hopefully going to take that adventure with her.

Yesterday she announced that she has sold her house and had bought a round the world ticket for her and the children. She leaves on March 1st and is travelling across the continents in search of a puzzle piece that has been missing for a while, a little slice of happiness to complete her life. She has sold her house, her car, all of her belongings apart from a few things she is putting into storage and is going to do a very brave thing that most of us just don't have the balls to do.

I will miss her and the children terribly but i am SO happy for her and the children to be taking this adventure. She will keep in regular contact and i will be posting her news as and when it comes in if you are interested. I wish her safe passage and happy times and i hope that she finds what she is searching for.

Buy Me This Mummy!

Have you ever heard of 'Pester Power'? It is Ad Speak for the nagging and whining that your children plague you with when they want something. 99.9% of the time you give in and they get their way and there are companies out there that do everything they can to make their products top of the Pester List.

In the weeks running up to Christmas Marketeers will try to nudge, cajole and prod your kids into buying their stuff. Some of the most effective ways of doing this is repetitive advertising during kids TV shows, some of the most expensive advertising slots on the planet. The 30 second Super Ad. Why? because they work! With the average child watching between 10 and 20 hours of TV a week the Marketeers have a captive audience.

Wal-Mart in the USA (they now own some big stores in the UK to) have this year gone one better. They have a 'Toy Wish List' website. This fun, child friendly site allows Little Lucy to log on and with the help of two cute elves, she can pick what she wants for Christmas and then that list is mailed directly to her mum and dad. No pressure there then folks!

You can also bet that if there is a favourite movie at this time of year then one of the MANY licensed toys is going to be a 'must have'. They love the movie so they want EVERY TOY!

A very clever ploy is the great 'Toy Shortage'. Plan a shortage of a popular, newly released toy and it's the perfect way to hook in the kids who won't stop until their parents have hunted one down and bought it. Remember Furbies?

So the pressures building Mums and Dads. The Ads are constant and your children are going to 'Pester The Pants' off you for the toys and games that they are exposed most to. They will be hooked and you know why? beause in the US alone last year companies spent $1.4 billion A MONTH marketing directly to children. $1.4 BILLION! A MONTH!
There's No Escape :-)

Merry Christmas!

Restless Legs Syndrome - Very Cool Video!

Had to add this short addition to our blog as we think this is Ooo!

Do you suffer from Restless Legs Syndrome or know someone that does? Sometimes called 'Childrens Legs' it affects millions of people in the UK. This clever ad designed to bring attention to the disorder is brilliant. Guaranteed you'll love it.

Take a look.... http://www.leeanddan.com/restlesslegs.html
Are Our Children Suffering From 'Nature Deficit Disorder' ?..

We have ADD, ADHD and now we have NDD. Yes we now have Nature Deficit Disorder. Not a scientific medical term but a term introduced to highlight a cause and possible therapy to many disorders diagnosed in children today. Having read a little about this assigned disorder and thought about how children live today i actually think there is some truth in it.

I for one, now in my mid 30's, spent my childhood tromping through the great outdoors getting muddy, playing in trees and enjoying outdoor sports. It made me appreciate my immediate environment, helped keep me healthy and taught me valuable lessons about nature hands on. Now all grown up i look around at kids today and realise, sadly, how much things have changed.

Today’s kids are more likely to know about global environmental perils, that they are told about, than physically experiencing the wonders of the outdoors within a short distance of their homes which creates a deeper and lasting understanding. They completely understand Tomb Raider, Need For Speed and other far more complicated video games but have no familiarity with lifeforms they might find crawling around on the ground in their gardens, or with the processes of nature.

Not only is being outdoors FUN and many of us so called 'Baby Boomers' can vouch for that, but there are also huge benfits to be gained that kids now are lacking and in some cases are suffering because of it. They are 'estranged' from the natural world and missing an important part of healthy human development which
may be at least partially to blame for the seemingly epidemic cases of obesity, depression, and learning and behavior disorders in children today.

Our brains are naturally set up for a nature-oriented existence that has been innate in all of us for thousands of years.
The brain is strong and flexible, so a majority of kids adapt fairly well to today’s overstimulating environment. But the rest don’t. Perhaps increasing childrens exposure to nature-based activities and education may provide at least a partial remedy for these conditions which blight modern, western societies. Many parents are happy for a quick fix in the shape of a pill without exploring alternatives, some try everything and still have to go with the chemicals but many don't even want to try. The answer to their problems may be a step outside the back door. A FREE therapy for ADD/ADHD!

Today our kids’ access to (and motivation toward) nature-based activities is in much shorter supply. The disappearance of open spaces, the rise of 'Cyber Entertainments', the increase of safety concerns, the introduction of longer school hours and busy, two-wage-earner family lifestyles are all obstacles. However, with a little effort even at weekends to get outside away from the games, the tv, the junk food every child can enjoy what nature intended. They will become more environmentally aware, more appreciative of looking after their environment and it may even be a Great Therapy for helping with little Johnnys problems.

This is one case when perhaps we should follow the Americans. A 'Back To Nature' Movement is blooming across the nation funded by private and public services. So to make 'Nature Deficit Disorder' a thing of the past, before it becomes a formal diagnosis, we should all go outside. Even if it means rain and mud, it's fun and it's healthy and if you want everyone to sleep soundly there's no better remedy.

HAVE FUN!
